title Envisioning Home with Queer Holiness at the Core: A Case Study of Korean American Christian Communities
abstract

This dissertation seeks to examine the ways in which Korean American Christians can embrace holiness as an expression or a manifestation of their spiritual wholeness, through the nurturing and communal support of LGBTQ community members. This communal holiness would provide a home space for LGBTQ Korean American Christians. A home space in which their sacred of worth can be realized in a manner commensurate to their heterosexual counterparts. This ideal ethical community, I call, a community of queer holiness in which the community deepens the meaning of holiness according to the reclaimed meaning of queer.

Drawing on a liberationist approach within Christian social ethics, this dissertation scrutinizes Korean American Christians' experience of home which for many, home is a place of acceptance and, for others, a non-liberating rejecting and damaging space. Within the dissertation, a theo-ethical notion of home is constructed for Korean American Christians with a focus on LGBTQ Korean American Christians among the marginalized within this home. By reclaiming Methodist traditional notion of holiness and Queer theology's notion of queerness, an ethics of queer holiness as a core value system for Korean American Christians is presented.

Utilizing qualitative interviews of six Korean American Christians including two Korean American LGBTQ individuals, two parents of LGBTQ individuals, and two pastors, the lived religious experiences of these individuals were collected and analyzed. Additionally, the voices of Korean American LGBTQ and their allies were collected through media sources such as documentaries, narrative performance videos, and interview clips.

The core task of this dissertation is to re-conceptualize Christian ethical norms and church practices that build the community of queer holiness wherein Korean American Christians across sexual orientation and gender identities can thrive spiritually.
