title Leadership for Engaging the MZ Generation: A Case Study of the MZ Young Adult Ministry at Soongeui Church
abstract This study explores the sociocultural characteristics of the MZ generation within the VUCA era—marked by Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity—and proposes a new leadership direction suited to these realities. As digital natives, the MZ generation values self-expression, horizontal communication, procedural fairness, and meaning-centered participation. Yet they experience deep anxiety amid rapid change, perceiving community and leadership in ways that differ markedly from previous generations.

Despite these shifts, authoritarian and control-oriented leadership remains embedded in both society and church contexts, accelerating the alienation of younger generations. This study therefore advances Reverse Leadership as a viable alternative—a horizontal, collaborative model that connects the experience of older generations with the MZ generation's digital literacy and cultural sensitivity, moving beyond instruction toward mutual growth and partnership.

Through a case study of the Young Adult Ministry at SoongEui Church, the study examines how pastoral communication, vision proclamation, customized discipleship, and Reverse Leadership contribute to community recovery and growth. Ultimately, this study argues that youth ministry in the VUCA era can no longer rely on authority-based structures alone. A fundamental leadership transition is required—one that regards young people not as objects of management, but as active subjects of ministry. Within Pastor Eunkyu Park's pastoral framework, this study envisions a renewed future for the younger generation and offers practical directions for the Korean church in walking faithfully with the next generation.
