title From Laity to Clergy: Leadership Transition Challenges in the North America Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana
abstract This study examines leadership transitions within the Nort America Diocese of the Methodist Church Ghana, focusing on the shift from lay-founded congregations to clergy-led societies. While some clergy contributed to the establishment of churches during their studies in the United States and Canada, many churches were initiated, registered, and resourced by laypersons. These lay leaders played critical roles in securing legal status, acquiring property, and sustaining congregational life. The research aims to propose a practical and contextually appropriate framework for leadership transition that preserves the integrity of Connexional governance while honoring the foundational contributions of lay leadership. Using qualitative methods - including interviews, observations, and document analysis-the study focused on selected societies that have undergone such transitions. Findings from a focus group interviews related to five categories of transition challenges: internal, external, relational, spiritual, and structural. The study also identified five strategic domains essential to effective transition: prevention, resolution, reconciliation, governance, and spirituality. The research advocates for a model of collaborative leadership that promotes shared authority, inclusive decision-making, and mutual respect between clergy and laity. Recommendations include codifying transitional guidelines in the Church's Standing Orders, instituting pre-appointment orientation, enhancing governance training, and deepening spiritual formation. The proposed framework seeks to nurture unity, clarify roles, and support the Church's mission in the diaspora context.
