title Moving Beyond Diversity Theater: Approaching Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a Form of Spiritual Formation
abstract Our nation's history of racism created a universal struggle which impacted the ways we all live, work, play and worship. As a result, many predominantly white communities and faith organizations are turning to diversity, equity and inclusion trainings to help aid and bridge the gaps in understanding and recognizing the role institutional racism plays within their communities. This thesis will examine what diversity, equity and inclusion trainings might look like as a form of spiritual formation. Drawing from personal experiences of walking along side predominantly white organizations that declared their full commitment to diversity but struggled to live into that commitment, combined with research on the experience of others and reflection on the leading voices in the field, this thesis cultivates news tools and approaches to diversity, equity and inclusion work. It does this by analyzing how those failed attempts impact the spirit, mind and bodies of black folk and explores how new views of God and creation might help us build belonging and live into a broader and stronger commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work. It will examine what we can learn from those failed attempts, to help us see what we are getting right and what we are getting wrong.
