There was a time when it was a tradition for everyone to go to church on Sundays, study the Bible, and pray at school - a picture of old America. However, a situation in the United States, where we live now, is completely different. Every church is losing its members. Ten years ago, when I worked at Fairmount UMC, only 25 people worshiped every Sunday in the main hall that could accommodate 500 people. This decrease in membership is not just a problem for the church; Christian faith in Western societies, including that of the United States, is becoming more and more obsolete. The church, like a sinking boat, forecasts a dark future.
There is a saying that a crisis is an opportunity. Turning this crisis into an opportunity is our church's urgent task, and it should be our ministry to dedicate to God. As the influence of the church dwindles, the teachings of the Bible are becoming foreign to all generations. What should our church do to turn this crisis into an opportunity? Isn't it a faith movement that begins in the most basic family? We need to restore the spirit of the Early Church, which started from the early days of church history and raised the warriors of faith that the world could not handle.
This study seeks to find the essence of the church by proposing a family ministry. The target audience is young adults of the Korean Community Church of New Jersey, and the whole family from the young generation is established as a small church. In this era where the secular world is sweeping away, we want to contribute to building a true Christian family that lives by faith.
This study presents programs such as Bible reading, religious education at the table, and other lectures and seminars that families who participate in family ministry can engage in for a year, so that they can practice them practically.

주일이면 누구나 교회에 가는 것이 당연하고 학교에서 성경을 공부하며 기도하던 것이 자연스러운 때가 있었다. 예전 미국의 모습이다. 지금 우리가 살아가는 미국의 상황은 전혀 다르다. 교회마다 교인들은 줄어가고 있다. 필자가 10년 전 시무했던 Fairmount UMC는 500명을 수용할 수 있는 본당에서 매 주일 25명의 인원이 예배를 드려왔다. 이러한 성도의 감소 현상은 비단 그 교회만의 문제가 아니다. 미국을 비롯한 서구 사회의 기독교 신앙은 점점 더 낡은 것이 되어 가고 있다. 교회는 가라앉는 배(Sinking boat)처럼 미래가 어둡다고 전망을 한다.
위기는 기회라는 말이 있다. 이 위기를 기회로 만들어야 하는 게 우리 교회의 숙제이고 하나님께 드릴 우리의 사역이 되어야 한다. 교회의 영향력이 줄어가면서 모든 세대에게 성경의 가르침이 낯선 것이 되어가고 있다. 이 위기를 기회로 바꾸기 위해 우리 교회가 해야 할 것이 무엇일까? 가장 기본적인 가정에서 시작되는 신앙 운동이 아닐까? 교회 역사의 초기에서부터 시작하여 세상이 감당할 수 없었던 믿음의 용사들을 키워낸 초대교회의 모습을 회복해 나가는 것이 요구된다.
이 연구는 가정사역을 제안함으로써 교회의 본질을 찾아가고자 한다. 대상은 뉴져지연합교회(KCCNJ) 청장년층으로 하여 젊은 세대부터 온 가족이 작은 교회의 모습으로 세우지면서 세속이 휩쓸고 있는 이 시대에 믿음으로 살아가는 참된 기독 가정을 세우는데 기여하고자 한다.
이 연구는 가정 사역에 참여한 가정들이 1년 동안 참여할 수 있는 성경 통독과 식탁에서의 신앙교육, 그 밖의 강의나 세미나 등의 프로그램을 제시하여 구체적으로 실천할 수 있도록 하였다.
