Since H. Appenzeller and H. Underwood had come to Korea in 1885, Korean
churches have grown to an unprecedented extent in the church history. However, current
Korean churches show a sign of decline. This may be due to a lack of maturity and
growth in faith despite the impressive success in the numerical growth of churches. The
purpose of this study is to propose an alternative curriculum in Christian Education to
help Korean churches their growth by returning to the Bible.
For this purpose, this study researched using 'the Curriculum in the church' by
Maria Harris and 'the One Year Tongdok Bible' by Byoungho Zoh. Harris presents five
categories in her curriculum that defines the entire process of faith. Zoh insisted on
reading the Bible as a whole, not in part, to read it in chronological order, and to focus on
the heart of God - this is what he defined as "Tongdok".
This study investigated "the Curriculum in the Church" and "the One Year
Tongdok Bible" in detail. Moreover the author proposes 'the One Year Bible Tongdok as
a Curriculum of Teaching Ministry' as an alternative program. The author interviewed,
four people in-depth, who participated in this program. As a result, 'the One Year Bible
Tongdok' is an effective curriculum of teaching ministry. Especially, categorizing the
Bible Tongdok into five sections as Harris suggested is very effective.
Korean churches should refocus on the Bible, the essence of the Christian faith,
through the spirit of the "ad fontes". Only then Korean churches can reflourish by
pursuing the Christian spiritual practice of recovering the image of God. In conclusion,
this study expects 'The One Year Bible Tongdok' will be an effective curriculum of
teaching ministry to help bear the missional fruits of Korean churches.
