Pursuing a Missional Church in a Mission Field: A Study of a Relational/Spiritual Church at Krabi in Thailand
| abstract |
This is a study of missional strategies for southern Thailand. Thailand is a
country where the gospel of Jesus Christ was preached before Korea. Although Thailand
has 190 years of mission history, it still shows an evangelization rate of less than 1% of
the total population. Moreover, southern Thailand is in a worse condition. Therefore, a
new perspective on mission is needed in southern Thailand. This study deals with the
understanding of the history of Christianity in Thailand, the special situation in southern
Thailand, and the coexistence of Islam and Buddhism. Half of Krabi's population is
Buddhists and nearly half is Muslim. As a Christian evangelization strategy for them, this
thesis reviews the mission strategy through cooperative missions and cultural missions.
Furthermore, in the situation of Covid-19 in 2020, a new missional approach was needed,
and various new attempts were sought. This study aims to build a missional church
through reflection on the mission that has been done in the existing traditional church and
a new mission strategy that fits the situation. It is a thesis that came out of the question of
"How to make a model of a missional church" in the mission field through an
understanding of the missional church. This thesis examines the situation of the mission
field in historical, social and religious aspects, and reflects on the current realistic and
tasks of Christian mission in southern Thailand. In addition, I have been discussing for a
long time with the church members, local pastors, and non-Christian Thais for effective
ministry methods for them. This project seeks a way to harmonize both the life's needs of
local church members and maturity of faith through contextualization, and effective
mission ministry through cooperation between the Korean church and the local church,
missionaries and local pastors, and local churches. In the ever-changing world,
missionaries need to sensitively comprehend the changing situation of a mission field and
find way to influence the lives and beliefs of local people. This project is not about
mission within a church building, but a model for a missional church that carries the
gospel of Jesus Christ and goes to the world.
