Paging Dr. Robot
| abstract |
Can artificial intelligence (AI) really provide the diagnostic answers to help physicians spend more
time with their patients? This initial exploratory study goes into detail about AI in healthcare and
its effect on the doctor-patient relationship. I summarize this by using the four-box analysis, which
is a tool used by bioethicists to help weigh the risks and benefits of using versus not using
treatment. I surveyed a medical doctor along with 28 Atlantic Medical Group physicians across
the Atlantic Health System (Morristown, Overlook, Newton, Chilton, and Hackettstown Medical
Centers, Goryeb Children's Hospital, and Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute) to collect their overall
thoughts, opinions, expectations, and experiences about this so called "Fourth Industrial
Revolution." With regards to privacy and regulating AI in healthcare, please refer to Appendix A,
as these areas are also greatly affected by the implementation of AI in healthcare. The four-box
analysis is also used here to help break down the ethics that comes with AI in privacy and
regulation. The research methodology regarding privacy and regulation is also found in Appendix
A. In Appendix B, I introduce the Robot Companion to help summarize the different AI ethical
questions. The survey is found in Appendix C.
