Black Milk
| abstract |
Black Milk traces the effects of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism through several generations of the speaker's family.
It interweaves lyric and narrative poems about two parents, how they lived before the Holocaust, and how they experienced life after they left Europe to live in Canada as survivors.
The book also reveals how trauma is passed down through the generations by tracing the fallout of the Holocaust as it affected the speaker.
The title metaphor of drinking black milk betokens the trauma and suffering of the victims of war.
