The Origins of Music Therapy in Military and Veteran Affairs
| abstract |
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the historic role and rationale for music in American military medicine, as well as explore the evolution of the music therapy profession at military and Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) hospitals. This examination will attempt to discover and disseminate relevant past and present-day literature to best characterize the music therapy professional origins with military and veteran care. To further ground this research, pertinent interdisciplinary scholarly articles, books, and resource materials provided supplemental insight from the medical, military, veteran affairs, anthropological, philosophical, psychological, creative arts therapies, holistic, and humanities perspectives on the part music in medicine. The historical insight obtained from this inquiry is important for the growth and advancement of the music therapy profession.
