Addressing Racial/ Ethnic Disparities with Liberation Psychology, and Critical Consciousness: The Role of Social Medicine in Medical Education.
|
abstract |
Despite the medical advancement of the U.S. healthcare delivery system, our healthcare system continues to be plagued with racial/ethnic disparities. These
disparities not only exist but are neither going away nor diminishing. Racial/ethnic disparities are well-documented. These well documented studies seem to
explore and present one determinant as the cause of these racial/ethnic disparities. This author believes that the real determinant is—not acknowledging
that unrealized racialized ideology is the foundation of all these determinants. With the use of concepts from Liberation Psychology, critical consciousness
and social medicine, there is the potential to assist healthcare professionals in becoming aware of their stereotypes, prejudices, and biases. Through the
development and implementation of progressive medical education in the U.S. healthcare, social medicine could be the key for integrating a new approach in
medical education via its curriculum that could enlist physicians in reducing and/or eliminating racial/ethnic disparities in the U.S. healthcare delivery system.
