Dino Frescobaldi in Translation: Love, Light and L'intelletto

Dino Frescobaldi was a prominent member of the stilnovisti, an elite intellectual group of Florentine poets who popularized the Dolce Stil Novo (Sweet New Style) movement of vernacular love poetry. While scholarship has heavily favored Dante and Cavalcanti, the voices of lesser-known members like Frescobaldi remain undervalued, with limited translational work available. This dissertation addresses this gap by providing a comprehensive, close-to-text English translation of Dino Frescobaldi's complete rime, aiming to make his work accessible to a wider readership. The project presents the English translations following the original Italian text to facilitate a nuanced reading of his linguistic choices. Beyond translation, this study reveals that Frescobaldi's contribution to the Dolce Stil Novo movement was not merely a passive adoption of the style, but an active expression of his unique voice and vision. Accordingly, this project includes a dedicated section of annotated translations to help the reader engage with the poetry as art while simultaneously appreciating the theological, philosophical, and courtly environment in which it was produced. By exploring the cultural, intellectual, and poetic context of the medieval period, this dissertation examines how Frescobaldi's poetry navigates the trials of unrequited love, specifically through his personal portrayal of the donna musa (female muse), highlighting his unique philosophical focus on the concepts of love, light and intelletto (intellect).
