title 'Rough Draft' Preservation of the American Landscape: Reflections on Seasons in the Works of Charles Burchfield, Andrew Wyeth, and Robert Frost
abstract Rough Draft is an illustrated poetry and short prose collection with a brief exposition at the end. In this manuscript, nature serves as a point of departure and closure. The ecocritical study in this dissertation comes from location-specific inspiration. The impact of climate change, plastic waste and pollution, and habitat loss due to human encroachment is a catalyst for this approach. The artistic practice engaged in this work is based on the idea of biodiversity and inclusion, a recognition of the concept of interconnectedness between the human and non-human worlds and the impacts we have on each other, and a belief that integrating this ecological view into an artistic practice would reveal new understanding and inspire further action in defense of the environment.

The critical reflection explores wilderness as the most important characteristic of the American landscape and the historical significance of works of art from a perspective of environmental preservation. It primarily considers the artistic legacy of Charles Burchfield, Andrew Wyeth, and Robert Frost, the artists who embraced American reality, landscape, lifestyle, and people.

The principal methodology used is the division based on seasonal variation. This structural device is established in the introductory segment and followed in the creative section. By connecting environmental focus, ethnic awareness, and positive metaphysical harmony through poetry and visual art, this dissertation aims to engage our consciousness in not only how to be at home in one’s own life but also how to be a better human on this planet.
