The Purgatory Project
| abstract |
In this dissertation I include a book length memoir about mental illness, childhood trauma, and addiction. This episodic narrative seeks to explore both the biological model of mental illness as well as the trauma-induced model and how both models are important in the treatment of mental illness. In my scholarly essay, I use memoirs written by Susana Kaysen, Terese Marie Mailhot, Terri Cheney, and Roxane Gay to discuss how mental illness memoirs function in revealing several key components, such as biological and trauma-based approaches to the disease and the stigma and treatment of mental illness.
