For my honors thesis, I decided to take a ten minute play that I wrote in Playwriting I and turn
that into a short film "Dead Serious" is about a woman named Alice Danvers, a medium, who can
talk to ghosts, but she's unlike any other medium because she hates people, both dead and alive. A
junior in college , one day her former best friend/childhood bully comes back to haunt her. The
screenplay begins as Alice is on the phone, preparing for the end of her day. Her ex-friend Eric
comes back in ghost form, asking for a desperate favor.
Over the course of the screenplay Eric tries many different ways to make Alice call his sister
to tell her that his death wasn't her fault. Unfortunately for Eric, Alice has never learned the proper
coping skills for dealing with her abilities nor has she learned to put the past behind her nor to forgive.
At first she refuses, and instead, tries to drink her way out of the situation.Because the wounds cut so
deep due to incidents from high school, she is unwilling to help. As the screenplay progresses, we
learn more and more about Eric and his motives and regrets and towards the end of the screenplay
Alice decides to put the past behind her and maybe they will work together.
