Divine Omniscience, Grace, and Free Will: A Defense of Catholic Molinism
| abstract |
"I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will!" sang Geddy Lee off Rush's
famous album Permanent Waves. What is conveyed here is a certain paradox that the human
mind is confronted with when examining its cognitive experience of what we call "free will."
Further, this paradox becomes even more daunting when it is combined with a belief in God. If
God is all-knowing, and hence knows our future actions, is free will tenable? What would free
will consist of, if it is? This thesis argues not only that a belief in free will is logically
compatible with the Abrahamic God, but also that Christian theology, specifically in a Catholic
context, allows for this free will.
