The Corporation Cycle of Environmental Injustice That Disrupts Equity
| abstract |
This Honors thesis analyzes the impact of refineries on communities of color and how
they lead to environmental injustices. Two case studies of refineries are analyzed in this thesis by
understanding their buy-out policies. Both case studies deal with black majority communities,
and they assess the damage caused by refineries. The damage assessment of each case
investigates the harms associated with their lives including cultural heritage as well as
displacement. Each case evaluates the residential buy-out process by looking at the negotiations
between the corporation and the community about purchasing the property. This thesis provides
an analysis of corporations' approach to non-white communities while they set up refineries and
provide compensations to the communities through the buy-out process. The thesis argues that
without certain protections and collectivization, policies from corporations like the buy-out
process will perpetuate cycles of inequalities environmentally, socially, and economically.
