Out With A Bang: Exposing the Relationship between Gun Violence and the Strength of Gun Laws in the United States
| abstract |
Amidst the 2,033 (Lopez and Sukumar) mass shootings that have taken place in the
United States since Adam Lanza open fired at Sandy Hook Elementary School in
December, 2012 a critical debate surrounding the efficacy of our nation's gun violence
prevention methods has raged on. In order to determine whether or not gun control
legislation in the United States has any bearing on the reduction or prevention of gun
violence, one must ask the question: does gun control work? The goal of this thesis is to
unpack that question. Through examining the history of guns and gun culture in the
United States, comparing federal versus state gun laws and analyzing the perception of
gun laws in the U.S., this paper will hypothesize that the rate of gun violence in a state is
directly tied to the presence or absence of gun control laws. The data utilized in this
project supports my hypothesis and concludes that though the introduction of gun control
laws into a state is not the only way to reduce or prevent gun violence and instances of
mass shootings, it is the largest independent variable that contributes to why the rate of
gun violence varies across states in the United States.
